‘A Man Who Will Be Deeply Missed’: The Actress Meg Ryan Publishes Emotional Homage to Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the deceased filmmaker Rob Reiner, under whose direction she worked in the iconic rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Tragic Discovery
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Legal Proceedings Unfold
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan went on to write. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Hollywood Tributes Pour In
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner with a statement shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“No one matched his comic instinct, his dedication to rhythmic dialogue, or his elegant sharpening of drama,” the statement said. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. His finest trait was granting creative liberty. He valued input and made you part of the team. Collaborators felt like a unified team. Being guided by him was an honor, yet just one facet of his impact.”
A Storied Career
When Harry Met Sally was a box office and critical triumph in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and earning Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner while making When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a friend and director.
Reiner’s extensive filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
