California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's tenure as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
Newsom has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary announced a strategy to withhold federal funds from California and warned eliminating the power to grant CDLs.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy stated, following a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused loss of life and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.
Duffy had previously announced he was blocking $40 million from California for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office responded in a previous comment addressing the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A this month's poll showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom commented while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
