Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in armed forces or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to defend and defend this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute directives that contravene the statutes or our national charter."
The Former President's Furious Reply
The clip reportedly trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a combined announcement denouncing the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our country with tremendous national pride and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged social media posts and retract his aggressive language before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this United States and swore an vow to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that sacred duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the constitution and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Further Political Comments
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have leading members of the government instructing troops to defy commands, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and establish all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
