Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
