The 2026 Formula 1 cars are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly than this year.

Formula 1 has introduced the simplified vocabulary that will be used to reference the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The sport is introducing what is arguably the most significant rules overhaul in its illustrious history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a substantially higher energy storage, necessitating major innovations in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will strategically manage battery power – including during hot laps – to extract the best lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a diverse audience, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which phrases would make things clearer of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The primary aim was to present a series of complex technical aspects of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that clearly indicate the actual function of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding battery management, harvesting, and efficiency.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on television graphics to improve the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power available when a car is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the energy recovery system that can be used in overtaking or defending. It delivers the driver full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be used with calculation, as the total energy is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the straights for minimal air resistance and top speed, and angling down in the bends for maximum downforce.
  • Recharge: Drivers can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during coasting at the end of straights or in corners where only reduced throttle is applied.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a wheelbase reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is expected to drop by approximately 15-30%, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – both wings will open on the straights to reduce drag and increase straightline speed and return into place for peak handling.

Wheels will retain the current rim size, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical under present rules.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey device that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on carbon-neutral fuel, produced using plant-based materials or lab-created processes.
