Sheffield Wednesday fans described the day as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” following the team was placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri with a 12-point penalty imposed.
Club Crisis Leads to Deduction
The Owls are confronted with likely demotion after the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 adrift of safety. Team members and employees have not been paid on time in five of the past seven months, compounding the club's instability.
The appointed administrators have taken control of the process aiming to sell club assets, including the team's home ground, to settle outstanding debts including tax liabilities. Shortly after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed in the stadium.

Coach's Outlook For New Beginning
Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. The Dane said entering administration was necessary to embark on a new era.
Pedersen stressed “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”
Staff Insecurity
Club staff were emotional at the news, with Pedersen saying: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What comes next? Will things improve? Or won't they? The general feeling was that they are all looking forward to the future together with Sheffield Wednesday
Ongoing Financial Struggles
The club's condition has been deteriorating sharply since the summer after the former manager and players left following unpaid wages. The EFL expressed concern about the club’s finances in August.
From that point, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, using any income including league payments to address liabilities. Facing potential closure orders by tax authorities, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.
Insolvency Practitioner's Comments
A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor stated: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses over multiple seasons, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration allowing us to sell the club and ground together, which is great news for supporters.”
Government Reaction
Government official Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight highlighted again the importance of a football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation by the 2027-28 campaign.

Fan Response
Supporters have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season and thousands stayed away during the Middlesbrough match as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, officials urged fans to return.
