The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
