Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
