As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the capital showed an pollution measurement over 500, which represents ten times the healthy limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above healthy limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as the cold season begins.

Yet recently, the recently formed regional government petitioned the highest court to seek a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The problem in the city is attributed to a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million residents living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.

This pollution causes increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for 10,000 early mortalities per year in the city.
