Two Victims Revealed in Brown University Attack as Authorities Press On With Search for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s tragic incident in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

Nine other people were hurt in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male arrested in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was being released.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”

Public Fear

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.

The gunman opened fire inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Officers that searched the hotel recovered two firearms and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, the news agency reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was discharged from care, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Additional Memorials

Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “She was famed for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

Broader Statistics

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to data. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
