Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This occasion offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
