A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying these treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
