Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
